Regina School Divisions to work together on transportation of students

Regina Catholic Schools and Regina Public Schools are pleased to announce that both school divisions are working together towards establishing a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) concerning shared transportation of students in the city of Regina. This announcement was formally made at the meetings of the Separate and Public Boards of Education on June 12th and 13th, 2017, respectively.

Currently Regina Public Schools and Regina Catholic Schools have different transportation policies and offer separate transportation services to school families with Kindergarten to Grade 8 students. Both school divisions have a portion of their transportation services funded by the Ministry of Education and both school divisions have had to make changes to operations because of significantly reduced funding in the provincial education sector.

“We share many services and interests with Regina Catholic Schools,” says Greg Enion, Director of Education, Regina Public Schools. “In September, our new joint schools will be opening their doors to both Catholic and public schools students. It makes both practical and economic sense that we look at ways to also share transportation services.”

“We are interested in the probable savings that can be realized in exploring opportunities that exist in looking at sharing transportation services where it makes fiscal sense,” adds Domenic Scuglia, Director of Education, Regina Catholic Schools. “This will be the beginning of other discussions where we can find more operational efficiencies through potential shared practices or services.”

The MOU will form the basis for how both school divisions will transport Kindergarten to Grade 8 students in the future. Details of the MOU will be announced by the school divisions when it is completed.
